Lehmannkai 1+

Expansion of Lehmannkai 1 Lübeck

We, the Lehmann Group, intend to expand our port operations. For this purpose, we acquired in 2017 the plots of the former NWK coal power plant and the former Triangel works next to Lehmannkai 1. These areas are to be gradually used for port handling in the future. The working title for the site is “Lehmannkai 1+.”

Planning Background

We have observed a significant increase in the handling of forest products in this area for years. The reason for this is the positive shift in attitude toward the use of artificial packaging materials and finite resources. To meet the resulting higher customer demands, we are planning to expand our quay facilities and storage areas.

In two construction phases, four new warehouses are to be built to store forest products such as paper, pulp, and by-products from their production. These products are then used to manufacture items such as coffee filters, vacuum cleaner bags, and biodegradable coffee cups.

To further distribute these goods, we are planning an efficient rail connection, which will allow a large portion of the goods to be transported in an environmentally friendly manner by train.

The seaward handling of the goods will continue to be carried out using mobile equipment. Land-side handling will be done with conventional industrial trucks. The trend in handling technology is also moving toward energy-efficient equipment; however, it is not yet foreseeable which specific technology will be used.

Due to the increasing throughput, the number of employees at Hans Lehmann KG, as well as those of transporters and service providers, is expected to grow positively.

The necessary studies for the planning of Lehmannkai 1+ are supported by the European Commission. This European funding underscores the importance of our project, particularly in connection with the keyword “mobility transition.”
